SUMMER FUN with Family and Friends
If you can dream it, you can design it.
Design Seminars: Wednesday, July 19 & 26 and Aug.
2 & 9 - 3:30-6:30PM
Dream it…Design it Program
Free and open to youth and adults, this summer program
will bring together amateurs and professionals to
design their dream museum. At the Women at Work Museum
(WAWM), individuals and teams of colleagues, friends
and family members will explore museums from around
the world, alternative energy sources, historic preservation,
mapping, engineering, and how to balance aesthetics
and function with representatives of representatives
of Tufts University, Massachusetts Institute for Technology,
Annawon Council-Boy Scouts of America, City of Attleboro,
Attleboro Area Industrial Museum, Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute, and the Center for Balance by Design. Museum
designs developed by participants will be showcased
at the WAWM at a public reception on September 16,
2006.
Seminar I – Around the World and Back
Beginning on Wednesday, July 19, 2006, 3:30-6:30PM,
Seminar I will take participants around the world
and back to Attleboro. A tour of the WAWM and
a virtual tour of museums around the world will add
to the ideas participants have for how they want the
designs for their museum to reflect their interests
and be inviting to visitors.
North Attleboro resident Erin Casey has participated
in the development of the Dream it! Design it! program.
Erin is a recent graduate of Bishop Feehan High School
and will be attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
in the fall with a major in architecture. Pursuing
a career in the field of architecture combines Erin's
interests in math and art. Erin will present "Museums
around the World," a powerful series of photographs
and illustrations featuring the many aspects of museums
of history, art, science and those created for children.
Architectural styles vary greatly and include traditional,
contemporary, and whimsical. Some of Erin's
favorite museums and educational centers include the
Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, the Peabody Essex
Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, and the Louvre Museum
in Paris, France.
Traveling around the world as a designer, Nancy Young
will tell about her experiences in museums, in particular
the Louvre, as she gives a tour of the Attleboro Jewelry
Makers (AJM) building, formerly the Balfour Refinery,
at 35 County Street. The Museum is in space
donated by Nancy Young in the AJM building. Located
next to the Ten Mile River and Balfour Riverwalk Park,
it is an ideal setting to welcome visitors of all
ages. As part of the program, plans to
expand the space and designs for the interior and
exterior of the WAWM will be developed.
If we build it, who will come?
Join us at the WAWM for the Dream it! Design it! program
where we will initiate a dialogue with youth and adults
to find out what makes a museum matter to its community
and visitors from across the United States and around
the world.
Plan to come to one or all of the seminars. To register
or for more information, contact Katherine Honey,
Women at Work Museum Director, at 508-222-4430 or
at khoney@comcast.net.

Hello All: SEMAP is pleased
to announce the release of our fully updated ON-LINE
Service Providers Directory: http://www.umassd.edu/semap/partner/.
The SEMAP Service Providers Directory was created
to improve access to existing support services for
agriculture in Southeastern Massachusetts. Over 70
organizations are listed, including federal/state
government agencies, town Agricultural Commissions,
University programs, other educational institutions,
business & economic development agencies, commodity
and advocacy groups, support/information/nonprofit
groups, land conservation organizations, and food/restaurant
trade groups.
Directory listings include complete contact information,
a quick-reference check-off of types of assistance
and information supplied by the organization, and
a more detailed description of services. The online
version can be searched by organization type or alphabetically.
The 2006 update of the print and online SEMAP Service
Providers Directory was made possible by the Massachusetts
Crop Insurance Education program and by our advertisers,
Coastline Trust, First Pioneer Farm Credit, Murtha
Cullina LLP, Land for Good, and On the Farm. Thanks
to all our sponsors and advertisers, intern Deanna
Levanti for her hard work on the update, Dan Hazlitt
for creating the online version, and SEMAP's Technical
Assistance committee for oversight and review of the
update process.
The print version of the Directory was also recently
released. A print copy of the Directory is available
at no charge from SEMAP, and copies will shortly be
distributed to all listed agencies and advertisers.
To request a copy, notify us of any corrections, or
suggest any other organizations that should be considered
for future versions, please email skelley@umassd.edu.
