Award Winning Journalist to Discuss Her New Book
Please join us in welcoming Emmy and Peabody Award
winning journalist, Charlayne Hunter-Gault who will
discuss her newly released book, "New News Out
of Africa: Uncovering Africa’s Renaissance"
on Saturday, September 9 at 3:00 p.m. at the
Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum.
Her highly acclaimed book explores both the challenges
and positive aspects of the second largest continent
of the world. It "offers a fresh and surprisingly
optimistic assessment of modern Africa, revealing
that there is more to the continent than the bad news
of disease, disaster, and despair," according
to Oxford University Press.
The book has received overwhelming attention due to
Ms. Hunter-Gault’s refreshing depiction of change
and progress in Africa, specifically in post-apartheid
developments and democratic reform. Publisher’s
Weekly notes, "Hunter-Gault . . . has written
an incisive, informative work that provides a balanced
perspective on the continent’s recent past,
transformative present and potentially rich future."
Ms. Hunter-Gault has forty years of distinguished
journalism experience, including twenty years as a
correspondent on PBS’s The News Hour with Jim
Lehrer, Chief African Correspondent for NPR, and most
recently Johannesburg Bureau Chief for CNN. Since
1997, Ms. Hunter-Gault has lived in Johannesburg,
South Africa and released "New News Out of Africa"
this past June.
Do not miss this distinct opportunity to meet this
remarkable woman from Johnnesburg who not only holds
more than two dozen honorary degrees, but was also
the first African-American woman to graduate from
the University of Georgia (1962).
"New News Out of Africa" will be available
for sale, and refreshments will be served at the book
signing. This program, offered free of charge, is
sponsored by the New Bedford Historical Society, City
of New Bedford’s Office of Cultural Affairs
& Tourism, Old Bedford Village Development Corporation,
Rotch-Jones-Duff House and Garden Museum, and Baker
Books. For more information, please contact the Rotch-Jones-Duff
House and Garden Museum at 396 County Street in New

Let your Passport guide you along The Coastal Wine

New England Wine Growing Appellation which stretches
from the Cape and the Islands through South Coast
Massachusetts, Coastal Rhode Island and Coastal Connecticut.
The common thread through this wine region is our
close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and our Southeast
facing coastline which captures the warm Gulf Stream
waters in the summer and fall. We are a cool grape
growing region with most wineries here concentrating
on superior white wines and extraordinary sparkling
wines.
The 5 wineries can be visited in a day, but if you
desire winery tours, it will take 2 days. Visit
www.CoastalWineTrail.com for a listing of area B&B’s
and restaurants between the wineries. The wineries
can be visited in any order, but to avoid backtracking
we suggest you start at either Newport Vineyards or
Running Brook Vineyards. |
