Family Concert Series on the Green

The New Bedford Symphony Brass Ensemble

The Heart of Taunton presents a diverse mix of musical groups during its Family Concert Series. Held on historic Taunton Green, these FREE outdoor concerts feature local and regional musicians with a variety of musical styles. Also available are food concessions and kid-friendly activities such as face-painting, moonwalk, pony rides and more.

The New Bedford Symphony Brass Ensemble, featuring some of the finest brass performers in New England, will present a program that recreates the feel of the typical summer eve entertainment in days gone by. The concert will feature a variety of music ranging from light classical works by Nicolai Riimsky-Korsakov and Claude Debussy to patriotic pieces, jazz pieces by Gershwin and ragtime. And of course, no outdoor concert would be complete without the rousing marches by John Phillip Sousa! (There is no rain date for this concert.)

Remembrance Ceremony
Battleship Cove, Fall River, Ma

The site of the hour-long observation will take place against the backdrop of a huge American flag tha will be suspended between two ladder trucks from Fall River Fire Department.  Honor guards will join them.  The speaking program will include remarks from Fall River Mayor Will Flanagan, Police Chief Daniel Racine, Fire Chief Paul Ford, Exec. Director of Battleship Cove Brad King and President of the USS Massachusetts Memorial Committee Carl Sawejko.

A wreath will be placed on one of the towers and a second tossed in the Taunton river.  The Norwich University Band will provide the call to Taps and accompany the 40 voices of that University Choraleers.  A 21 gun salute and the release of doves and a bagpiper will also be included.  The Memorial Service will conclude with a flyover.

Battleship Cove is the world’s largest naval ship museum. Located in Fall River, MA, this nonprofit maritime museum and war memorial traces its origins to the wartime crew of the World War II battleship USS Massachusetts. This dedicated veterans group was responsible for the donation of the decommissioned vessel from the Navy and its public display at Battleship Cove.

The Fairhaven Village Militia, the Fairhaven Office of Tourism and guests present a two-day historical encampment at Fort Phoenix. Talk to period costumed men and women about the fort’s history and life in the 1770s. See military drilling, flintlock musket and cannon firing demonstrations and camp cooking demonstrations. Try tomahawk throwing or children games. Also see activities such as spinning, fire starting, demonstrations of 18th-Century dentistry and more.  Saturday evening at sundown (approx. 6:30 p.m.) see a demonstration “night firing” of the fort’s five cannons.
