New Bedford Whaling Museum’s
21st Annual Sailors Lecture Series
History of Cape Verdean/Brava Packet Trade
Beginning in the 19th century, Cape Verdean-owned sailing ships transported passengers and cargo between Cape Verde and New Eng- land. The Ernestina was one of the last of these. In 1982 the Schooner, a gift from newly-independent Cape Verde, made a 41-day voyage to the United States. Dr. Laura Pires-Hester and Dr. Michael K. H. Platzer worked together to bring the Schooner to America and co-au- thored the book Ernestina. They will discuss the Cape Verdean/Brava Packet Trade, and the Ernestina as a living representative of that trade. Members of the 1982 voyage will also be present; including Stefan Platzer, whose slides of the voyage will be shown.
