The Cape Verdean Recognition Day Parade caps off Cape Verdean Recognition Week – a week-long celebration of Cape Verdean independence and heritage in New Bedford.
The parade starts at Buttonwood Park, travels down Union St. to Acushnet Ave. to Grinnel St. and the Cape Verdean Vets Hall. Fireworks display will coincide with citywide Independence Day celebrations.

20th annual Joe Jesus Fifties Night
Also known as “Thursday Night Cruising,” the event will stretch throughout the Purchase Street
and Union Street area, with vehicles lining the streets and people dressed in poodle skirts and leather
jackets bopping along among them.
The event officially runs from 5 to 9 p.m., but Jesus said cars begin arriving around 1:30 p.m. It features more than 100 cars and last year saw more than 12,000 visitors come to downtown. It should be even bigger this year for the 20th anniversary, with live music by the Klassics, Jazzy Lady, Voyage, Blast from the Past, Russ Peterson, Sparkle Victor and the Twisters, and a performance by the Cheryl McCormick Dancers.
Proceeds will benefit The Standard-Times Neediest Families Fund, The Salvation Army and O.R.P.H. Inc., a non-profit organization geared toward preserving and restoring the Orpheum Theater and Sharpshooters Hall. The organizers of Fifties Night also ask that anyone attending bring a canned good for the food pantry collection as well.
In addition, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and local youth sports teams will be selling various food and beverages to help raise money for their own organizations
