City of Fall River

Fall River represents our old world culture and cuisine splendidly!

Each year 200,000 visitors are drawn to Battleship Cove. This unique "floating" museum is docked on the Taunton River and contains the world's largest collection of 20th century U.S. naval fighting vessels. Climb aboard and explore Battleship Massachusetts, Submarine U.S.S Lionfish, Destroyer U.S.S. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., two P.T. Boats and the Soviet missile cruiser, "Hiddensee."

Also at Battleship Cove is the magnificent Fall River Carousel. Fully restored to its previous splendor, this Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousel #54 is now housed in a beautiful Victorian-style hippodrome. The carousel, with 48 majestic steeds and two spectacular chariots, is the oldest functioning carousel in America.

Picnic, stroll and enjoy the view from Fall River Heritage State Park, located adjacent to Battleship Cove on Mt. Hope Bay. The park boasts a picturesque waterfront esplanade, rambling harbor boardwalk, visitors center and boathouse. The visitors center provides ample opportunity to explore Fall River's history, its people and its traditions.

The Marine Museum is a short walk from Battleship Cove. It houses an extensive collection of intricate model ships and other nautical memorabilia from the golden days of great sail ships and luxury steamships. The museum also houses the largest exhibit of Titanic artifacts and memorabilia in the United States, including a one ton, 28-foot model of the ill-fated vessel which, despite her "unsinkable" design, struck an iceberg, sinking on her maiden voyage.

For those who enjoy the memory of the railroad, a visit to the Old Colony & Fall River Railroad Museum is a must. This museum houses replicas of many old trains, preserving the nostalgic past of railroading in New England.

Take a step back in time when you visit the Fall River Historical Society. Built in 1843, the Greek Revival style mansion now holds artifacts reflecting Fall River's days as the largest cotton cloth manufacturing center in the world. Specialized collections of toys and dolls, china and glassware, costumes and accessories are all represented.

The Historical Society's collection of artifacts relating to the still unsolved Lizzie Borden murder mystery is the largest in existence. Actual courtroom evidence, rare photographs and even the handleless hatchet, the suspected murder weapon, are included in the exhibit. View the evidence and form your own conclusions. Also stop at the Lizzie Borden B&B and museum.

Once known as the "Textile Capital of the World," Fall River has earned itself another title in recent years. Many of the original granite mills that once turned out cotton now house factory outlets, making Fall River the "Birthplace of Factory Outlet Shopping."

Nearby, one of the Commonwealth's leading agricultural and dairy towns, Westport contains many off-the-beaten-path jewels: Westport Point, Westport Village, Westport Rivers Winery and Horseneck Beach just to name a few. With farmland stretching from back roads to the river, the area is perfect for cycling enthusiasts.
